Business Communication: Addressing the Social Gap
Ever sat in a meeting and thought any of these?
“I swear I was bored to tears before the hour that wouldn’t end.” "Will this person ever stop talking? 🙄” “Should I say something? Should I not? Is this the right time or room?” “Why can’t I seem to get a word in edgewise?” “Did they just say something deeply offensive? Do I speak up or play it safe?” “Oh crap, there's a hole in my pants. Smile and nod. Just smile and nod…”
Those aren’t just communication issues. They’re social communication breakdowns.
🧠 The Real Gap: It’s Social, Not Just Verbal
We keep saying “communication is key.” But in business, what we’re really missing isn’t communication—it’s connection.
What many business leaders label as communication problems are actually social intelligence problems in disguise.
That awkward silence after a team update? That moment someone dominates the room, and no one knows how to rein it in? That feeling of, “This doesn’t feel safe to say…”
These are all signs of a social gap—the space between what we say and what actually gets understood.
🔍 Communication vs. Social Communication
Communication is about information. Social communication is about interpretation. It’s how we decode tone, read the room, sense intent, and build trust.
It’s why a joke might land in one department and fall flat in another. Or why someone who looks “checked out” might actually be overwhelmed or unsure how to contribute.
And for those of us who are neurodivergent (🙋♀️), social communication isn't always intuitive. But that’s exactly why we need to teach it—not as fluff, but as a core skill.
Behavioral science backs this up: 🧠 Personal relevance drives retention. If it connects to the person, it sticks.
So instead of just training people to communicate, let’s train them to connect.
🤝 Relatability > Likability
In business, we often chase likability—the polished speaker, the well-rehearsed talking points, the “perfect” pitch deck. But likability fades. Relatability builds long-term trust.
Relatable communication is:
Clear, not cluttered
Warm, not robotic
Human, not mechanical
💬 Ms. Inner Critic sips her latte: “Oh, please. If I had a nickel for every time someone dropped jargon like ‘synergize ideation frameworks,’ I’d finally have enough for that private jet.”
🧠 Science Corner: Social Proof, Co-Creation & The IKEA Effect
Let’s break down three behavioral science principles that drive better connections:
1. Social Proof 👀 ➡️ 👥 ➡️ 🤝
People feel safer doing what they see others doing successfully. That’s why testimonials, visible engagement, and team buy-in matter.
2. Co-Creation 🤲 + 🤲 = 💡
When people help build something, they feel more invested in the result. (Think: LEGO Ideas, or team brainstorming that actually gets used.)
3. The IKEA Effect 🛠️ + 🧠 = ❤️ + 💰
We value what we help create. Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s imperfect. Effort = Ownership.
⚠️ Social Intelligence ≠ Manipulation
This one’s personal.
💬 Ms. Inner Critic raises an eyebrow: “You’re really bringing up that story?”
Yes. Yes, I am. Because I once got romance-scammed out of half my 401K by someone using social tactics that felt like connection—but weren’t.
And that experience taught me: 👉 There’s a difference between connection and manipulation. Social intelligence is about empathy and ethics. Manipulation is not.
That’s why in Chapter 4 of my upcoming Business Social Survival Guide, I break down this exact distinction. So others don’t have to learn it the hard way.
✅ Social green flag: Do they encourage you to check elsewhere? Or discourage questions?
🧩 Guidelines, Not Advice
In the guide, I offer a framework for conversational flow—a skill often overlooked in favor of public speaking or presentation tactics.
But flow is where connection happens. It’s the difference between someone feeling heard… or steamrolled.
Whether you’re the one dominating the meeting or the one who never gets a word in, conversational flow is the missing skill most businesses overlook.
💬 Ms. Inner Critic: “Great. So now we’re giving people a checklist for small talk? What’s next—emojis for empathy?” Actually… yes. That’s the point.
👀 A Note to Business Leaders
If you’re a CEO and your bottom line keeps hurting—even after implementing new “communication” programs, training sessions, and emotional intelligence courses—you’re not alone.
You’ve probably spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to “fix” the people problem.
But what you’re actually looking for... Is a system of human connection. That system is called social intelligence.
It bridges communication, emotional intelligence, leadership, and inclusion—without overwhelming your team with five different toolkits that don’t talk to each other.
🧠 Final Thought: In the Age of AI, Speak Human
AI is growing fast. But so is human confusion.
With deepfakes, scams, and robotic language on the rise, knowing how to speak human—with clarity, empathy, and connection—is more than a nice-to-have.
It’s a survival skill.
And if you're worried about judgment, criticism, or how to speak up without shrinking? Chapter 2 of my guide covers exactly that: 1-on-1 Survival.
Because if you can handle hard conversations privately, you can handle them publicly, too. Same principle. Different setting. That’s the snowball effect of social communication.
