The Four Steps

Each step builds on the last — together they create a complete picture of any social moment.

STEP 1

Break down the moment so you can rebuild it with clarity

Before reacting, pause and assess what's actually happening. What's the tone? What's the context? Is there a mismatch between what's said and what's meant? This step prevents misunderstandings by clarifying the moment's real signal.

→ Tone · Timing · Context · Safety

STEP 2

Turn confusion into something familiar

Translate the situation into something your brain already understands — a story, a comparison, a pattern you've seen before. Your brain learns faster when it can relate. This is where the moment starts to make sense.

→ Your brain learns faster when it can relate.

STEP 3

Ask yourself: what do I need right now?

Apply is the tool-selection stage — not the response stage. Before you react, figure out what would actually help you move forward. Sometimes it's a conversational tool. Sometimes it's five minutes to breathe, an unwritten rule you need to make visible, or someone else's perspective.

→ The right tool for this moment — not just the first thing that comes to mind.

STEP 4

Choose your next step — then check if it landed.

Once you've decoded, related, and figured out what you need, it's time to act. That might mean asking a question, naming a need, taking action, or repairing a misunderstanding. Check the result and adjust if needed.

→ A pause is a valid response — not avoidance.
